dc.description | This resource and accompanying data were outputs in Megan Bushnell's doctoral thesis on Gavin Douglas's translation methods in the Eneados (2021). The resource is not strictly a corpus, as it is built around one text - the Eneados and its source material - but it was assembled using corpus linguistic methods. Its source texts include: 1. David F.C. Coldwell's (1956-60) edition of the Eneados, accessed via Literature Online. 2. J.B. Greenough and G.L. Ketrridge's (1892-1902) edition of the Aeneid, accessed via the Perseus Digital Library, with orthography, punctuation, and segmentation adapted in reference to Jodocus Badius Ascensius's (1501) edition of the Aeneid. 3. A.C. Brinton's (1930) edition of Maffeo Vegio's Supplement, accessed via Virgil.org, with orthography, punctuation, and segmentation adapted in reference to Jodocus Badius Ascensius's (1501) edition of the Aeneid. Reference is also made to MS O.3.12 (Wren Digital Library, Trinity College, University of Cambridge), a manuscript of the Eneados, as well as to other early printed editions of the Aeneid, such as: 1. Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, Oxford Auct. P 2.15. 2. Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, Oxford Auct. Q inf. 2.4. 3. Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, Oxford Auct. O 1.18a. 4. Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, Oxford Auct. P 2.18. 5. Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, Oxford Auct. Q 4.19. 6. Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, Oxford Auct. O 1.18b. This resource contains all thirteen Books and Prologues of the Eneados, along with the twelve books of the Aeneid (19 BC) and the Supplement (1428). It does not contain any of the commentary included in Ascensius’s (1501) edition. The corpus-based apparatus comprises 39 base files that cover three authors (Virgil, Maffeo Vegio, and Gavin Douglas), three texts (the Aeneid, Supplement, and Eneados), and two languages (Latin and Scots), consisting of 259,391 words total. These base files have two versions: plain and XML, making 78 files total. The plain files represent the texts without any additional annotation. The XML files are enhanced with annotation describing the layout, narrative and speech boundaries, equivalent segments between the Latin and Scots, and lexical and grammatical information unique to each word (for Scots files only). The TEI schema - created using Roma - is also included. These files were designed for use with software from the AntConc family, specifically AntConc and AntPConc. AntPConc was used primarily to build the files, and then the files were uploaded onto Oxford’s CQPweb portal, which is an online platform for corpora with more sophisticated search abilities. In addition the scripts used for creating and transforming these files are included, including scripts for 1. tokenisation, 2. creating normalised annotation with a normalised word list, 3. creating normalised files, 4. merging normalised files with part-of-speech and semantic tagging with files with only normalised annotation. In addition, 13 separate datasets are included that were generated by analysis on the digital files. These datasets include: 1. A list of equivalent lines between the Eneados and Aeneid with their line ratios. 2. A list of the equivalent lines with high (≥ 4) and low (≤ 1) line ratios categorised by features such as translation type, pragmatic type, context, etc. 3. Comparison of segmentation across seven early printed editions of the Aeneid. 4. A list of which sections in Ascensius’s (1501) Aeneid correlate with which chapters in Eneados and whether the chapters preserve section boundaries. 5. A comparison of boundaries between translation units and boundaries between sections in Ascensius’s (1501) Aeneid. 6. A comparison of boundaries between translation units and page breaks in Ascensius’s (1501) Aeneid. 7. A guide to a PDF version of the Trinity College MS counting the number of lines on each page and monitoring whether page breaks converge with other ordinatio. 8. A guide to a PDF version of Ascensius’s (1501) Aeneid tracking which lines are on which page. 9. A list of repeated lines in the Aeneid categorised by layout, pragmatic type, context, etc. 10. A list of repeated segments in the Eneados and their Latin equivalents. 11. A list of repeated lines in the Eneados that are sourced from the Aeneid, further categorised by layout, pragmatic type, context, etc. 12. A list of repeated segments in the Eneados that are not sourced from the Aeneid, further categorised by layout, pragmatic, context, etc. 13. A version of Dataset 1 altered to account for pragmatic boundaries. |
