Bio je vedar i hladan aprilski dan; na cyasovnicima je
izbijalo trinaest. Vinston Smit, brade zabijene u nedra
da izbegne ljuti vetar, hitro zamacye u staklenu kapiju
stambene zgrade <1Pobeda,>1 no nedovoljno hitro da bi
sprecyio jednu spiralu osytre prasyine da udje zajedno s
njim.
Hodnik je zaudarao na kuvani kupus i stare otiracye.
Na jednom kraju je bio prikacyen plakat u boji, preveliki
za zatvoreni prostor. On je predstavljao samo jedno
ogromno lice, visye od metra u syirinu: lice cyoveka od
svojih cyetrdeset pet godina, sa gustim crnim brkovima i
crtama lepim na neki surov nacyin. Vinston krete ka
stepenicama. Pokusyati liftom nije vredelo. On je i u
najboljim prilikama radio retko, a trenutno je struja
bila ukinuta preko dana. To je bio deo akcije sytednje u
pripremama za Nedelju mrzynje. Stan je bio na sedmom
spratu, i Vinston . . .
