The letter (Sendbrief) Das Elltern die kinder zur Ehe nicht zwingen noch hyndern from 1524 is one of many popular writings of Luther that deal with the topic of marriage. It was first published by Lucas Cranach the Elder and became very popular. It has been reprinted ten times, translated into Latin and was also reprinted in Luther’s complete collection. The title page is a detailed woodcut that features the Luther rose, a symbol that was successfully introduced by Cranach and Döring to verify the authenticity of their Luther prints since 1524. Das Elltern die kinder zur Ehe nicht zwingen noch hyndern is addressed to the Imperial Knight (Reichsritter) Hans Schott von Schottenburg . Schott had married Anna von Auerbach, who had left her former adulterous husband Jakob Hufener. The case gained public attention and even Luther voiced his concerns about this marriage in 1526 , before it got annulled by elector (Kurfürst) Johann von Sachsen in 1528. Luther’s letter discusses the problem of secret engagements. He criticizes engagements without the agreement of the parents as well as parents that force their children to marry a person that they don’t love. Luther appeals to the parents, resp. the fathers, that they act according to the right measure and avoid to act as tyrants (and thus against God). Parents should aim to help their children to a good marriage and neither force them to get married nor prevent the children from being married at all, since according to Luther humans are made for marriage. Martinus Luther Augustiner zu Wittenburgk" was published by Luther through Johann Rhau-Grunenberg in Wittenberg, after Wolfgang Stöckel had published an unauthorized transcript of Luther’s first public statement on marriage in a sermon from the 16th January 1519. The revised Version does not have a woodcut on the title page and starts with a critical statement about the unauthorized transcript , asking the reader to ignore the unauthorized version. It is noted in what seems a calligraphic hand of Sir William Dugdale (1605-1686), an antiquary, herald and Royalist. Dugdale credits John Roe as the composer, however, the identity of this John Roe is difficult to ascertain. The hymn has 17-strophe with the last being supposedly incomplete. The transcription was encoded in TEI P5 XML by Duncan Jones. To produce the 1895 Kelmscott Press Beowulf, Morris used a prose translation by the Cambridge scholar A. J. Wyatt as the basis for his reimagining in verse. This semi-diplomatic transcription focuses on making the source text easy to read in conjunction with the manuscript images. Line breaks in the original have been retained where they correspond to a verse line in the poem but not for overflows triggered by ornamental capitals. Printed page numbers and quoir marks(signatures) have been ommitted and line numbers have been added. The flower fleurons at the end of each section heading are rendered as ⚘. The two leaf fleurons on page 36 have been rendered as ❧. The full Kelmscott edition includes a glossary and as this does not form part of this digital edition, such words as appear in the glossary have been defined using footnotes on their first appearance in the text.
