EDITION

The text is based on vol. 1 of the Foner edition of Paine's writings.

TEXT ERRORS

The following errors in the Foner edition have been corrected:

SPECIAL MARKERS:

The following markers have been used in the text:

   _  underscore   (for marking underlined words)

   #  number       (for marking compound proper names, e.g., George Washington)
                    is marked: Washington#George

   0  zero         (for marking dates, e.g., 0March#10#1776)


NOTES

1. Forts Washington and Lee is marked as
   [Forts] Washington#Fort and Lee#Fort

2. Hyphenated words that appear at the end of the
   line in the Foner edition have been reformed.

3. Compound proper names at the end of the line in
   the Foner edition appear on one line; e.g,
   Charles#the#First.

4. Page references have been entered according to the
   Foner edition using the COCOA format; e.g., <P 45>

5. Editorial notes in the Foner edition have not been
   reproduced.

6. Blank lines and multiple blank spaces, including
   paragraph indents, have not be preserved.
