THORNDIKE (Thorndike-Lorge Magazine Count) Notes provided by Roger Mitton, Dept of Computer Science, Birkbeck College, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HX November 1984 THORNDIKE contains over 19,000 entries from 'The Teacher's Word Book of 30,000 Words' by Edward L. Thorndike and Irving Lorge, Bureau of Publications, Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, 1944. Each line of the file contains one entry of 27 characters. The frequency per 4.5 million words (approx) is in columns 1-6, followed by the entry itself, beginning in column 8. The words are those in the principal list (Part 1 of the book) entitled 'List of words occurring at least once per 1,000,000 words'. The numbers give the frequency of occurrence in the Lorge Magazine Count (the L column in the book). (Where the value is given in the book as 'M', indicating a frequency of over 1000 per million, the actual value has been taken from Part 4 of the book.) It is possible for a word to have a frequency of 0 (zero) since the list was formed out of several word lists; a value of 0 indicates that the word did not occur at all in the Lorge Magazine Count but did occur in at least one of the other lists. Page 252 of the book gives the following description of the Lorge Magazine Count: 'The Lorge magazine count included nearly a million words from each of the following: Saturday Evening Post, Woman's Home Companion, Ladies' Home Journal, True Story, and Reader's Digest. [A bit less than a million from each of these would make up 'approximately 4.5 million' - the figure given on page IX of the Introduction.] Twelve issues of each magazine, spread somewhat evenly over the years 1927 through 1938, were used. The count was made by counting separately every combination of letters found. For example, arm, arms, arm's, arms', arming, and armed were counted separately.' Words in the book list beginning with capital letters are preceded in the THORNDIKE file by a $, and they come at the beginning of the file. There follows a sample of the file First 50 lines, then 10 lines every 2000, then the last 50.
